Traffic Calming Update – February 2026
Church Street Community Highways Scheme
Rudgwick Parish Council (RPC) has now received initial designs for schemes (known as Option-A and Option-B ) for traffic calming (incorporating the Church Street bus stop relocation) on the part of Church Street alongside the long lay-by between The Ridge and Freshwoods.
At its meeting on 9th February RPC considered these options having assessed a brief presentation as to the features of each, together with a summary of the overall project background. These papers are all available by clicking the aforementioned links and also with the meeting minutes.
RPC unanimously expressed a preference for Option-A over Option-B as it retained off-road parking and gave clarity to vehicle priority where motorists encountered the proposed 2 build-outs restricting the carriageway width. Some questions however remained over Option-A and these would be taken up with WSCC as the scheme design is improved and finalised.
Status Update following the 2024 Annual Parish Meeting Report
N.B. Community Highways Scheme (CHS) requests are made annually in July
- Watts Corner CHS (2 lane exit onto A281) was not taken up by WSCCC stating cost concerns relating to potential service(s) relocation. The March 2025 request by RPC for evidence to justify this decision remains unanswered.
- The Kings Head CHS has now been implemented (outside of the CHS process) but WSCC determined that the proposed road narrows signs were inappropriate.
- The 3rd CHS (Village Centre 20mph and ‘build-out’ north of Kilnfield Road roundabout) submitted in July 2024 has been an ongoing saga! Please see further details below.
- The 40mph buffer speed limit on the A281 Bucks Green approach (from Guildford) has been implemented via a TRO (Traffic Regulation Order).
- The Haven Road now has a 40mph limit throughout its whole length, also via a TRO submitted by RPC.
- Official bus stops (with necessary infrastructure) on Church Street south of the old railway bridge are now in place.
- The southbound Church Street bus stop (on Church Street) is scheduled to be relocated next year to the northern end of the layby (it is currently at the southern end). At the same time the official (but generally unknown and unused) northbound Church Street bus stop site will have a pole and bus stop flag installed. - In July 2025 a CHS was submitted to (virtually) double the width of the pavement around Watts Corner fronting the scrubland. This also included a request for concrete bollards around the pavement edge to further protect pedestrians traversing between Bucks Green and Rudgwick Village at this most exposed point. RPC expects WSCC to decide by January 2026 if this proposal can be progressed.
- The 3rd CHS of July 2024 was re-submitted in July 2025 but just to include the build-out and related pavement widening. Click here to access a pdf of the current (not finalised) plans for this work. This scheme would ‘solve’ the problem of the discontinuous Church Street pavement by the provision of an ‘official’ crossing point whilst helping to slow traffic entering the village centre from the north (as it would not have priority). The previously proposed 20mph speed limit is deferred pending an assessment as to the effectiveness of the proposed works and also the then wish of the resident community. RPC is liaising with WSCC to finalise details of a scheme on Church Street for implementation in 2027. Note that signage similar to that for the single lane traffic over the old railway bridge would be necessary. Illuminated bollards would be expected on the build out (East side), with just reflective posts at the pavement widening (West side).
